इमे रथाः काञ्चनपद्मचित्राः सदश्वयुक्ता वसुधाधिपार्हाः। एतान्समारुह्य परैत सर्वे पाञ्चालराजस्य निवेशनं तत्
Here are chariots adorned with golden lotus designs, yoked with fine horses and worthy of kings; mount these, all of you, and proceed to the residence of the king of the Panchalas.
ततः प्रयाताः कुरुपुंगवास्ते पुरोहितं तं परियाप्य सर्वे। आस्थाय यानानि महान्ति तानि कुन्ती च कृष्णा च सहैकयाने
Then those foremost of the Kurus set out, all together with the priest; they boarded those great vehicles, and Kunti and Krishna rode together in one chariot.
स्त्रीभिः सुगन्धाम्बरमाल्यदानै- र्विभूषिता आभरणैर्विचित्रैः। माङ्गल्यगीतध्वनिवाद्यघोषै- र्मनोहरैः पुण्यकृतां वरिष्ठैः
Adorned with fragrant garments and garlands, decorated with various ornaments, accompanied by auspicious songs and the sounds of musical instruments, charming and performed by the best of the virtuous women—
संगीयमानाः प्रययुः प्रहृष्टा दीपैर्ज्वलद्भिः सहिताश्च विप्रैः
They set out joyfully, accompanied by blazing lamps and Brahmins.
स वै तथोक्तस्तु युधिष्ठिरेण पाञ्चालराजस्य पुरोहितोऽग्र्यः। सर्वं यथोक्तं कुरुनन्दनेन निवेदयामास नृपाय गत्वा
Thus instructed by Yudhishthira, the chief priest of the king of the Panchalas went and reported everything exactly as told by the son of Kuru to the king.
श्रुत्वा तु वाक्यानि पुरोहितस्य यान्युक्तवान्भारत धर्मराजः। जिज्ञासयैवाथ कुरूत्तमानां द्रव्याण्यनेकान्युपसंजहार
Hearing the words spoken by the priest, which the righteous king Yudhishthira had said, he, desiring to know the intentions of the foremost Kurus, brought forth many gifts.
फलानि माल्यानि च संस्कृतानि वर्माणि चर्माणि तथाऽऽसनानि। गाश्चैव राजन्नथ चैव रज्जू- र्बीजानि चान्यानि कृषीनिमित्तम्
Fruits and prepared garlands, armor, shields, seats, cows, ropes, and other seeds for agriculture, O king, were brought forth.
अन्येषु शिल्पेषु च यान्यपि स्युः सर्वाणि कृत्यान्यखिलेन तत्र। क्रीडानिमित्तान्यपि यानि तत्र सर्वाणि तत्रोपजहार राजा
And whatever else might be needed for other crafts, all tasks were fully provided there; and all things for sport and play were also brought by the king.
वर्माणि चर्माणि च भानुमन्ति खड्गा महान्तोऽश्वरथाश्च चित्राः। धनूंषि चाग्र्याणि शराश्च चित्राः शक्त्यृष्टयः काञ्चनभूषणाश्च
Brilliant armor and shields, great swords, splendid horses and chariots, excellent bows and decorated arrows, spears, lances, and weapons adorned with gold—
प्रासा भुशुण्ड्यश्च परश्वधाश्च सांग्रामिकं चैव तथैव सर्वम्। शय्यासनान्युत्तमवस्तुवन्ति तथैव वासो विविधं च तत्र
Javelins, clubs, axes, all kinds of weapons for battle, the best beds and seats with fine coverings, and various garments were also there.
कुन्ती तु कृष्णां परिगृह्य साध्वी- मन्तःपुरं द्रुपदस्याविवेश। स्त्रियश्च तां कौरवराजपत्नीं प्रत्यर्चयामासुरदीनसत्वाः
But Kunti, the virtuous one, having embraced Krishnaa, entered the inner apartments of Drupada. And the women there, wives of the Kaurava king, with gentle hearts, honored her.
तान्सिंहविक्रान्तगतीन्निरीक्ष्य महर्षभाक्षानजिनोत्तरीयान्। गूढोत्तरांसान्भुजगेन्द्रभोग- प्रलम्बबाहून्पुरुषप्रवीरान्
Observing those men, whose gait was like lions, whose eyes were like those of great bulls, clad in deerskin upper garments, their shoulders concealed, their arms long like the coils of mighty serpents—those foremost of men—
राजा च राज्ञः सचिवाश्च सर्वे पुत्राश्च राज्ञः सुहृदस्तथैव। प्रेष्याश्च सर्वे निखिलेन राज- न्हर्षं समापेतुरतीव तत्र
The king, all his ministers, the king’s sons, his friends as well, and all the attendants, O king, were filled with great joy there.
ते तत्र वीराः परमासनेषु सपादपीठेष्वविशङ्कमानाः। यथानुपूर्व्याद्विविशुर्नराग्र्या- स्तथा महार्हेषु न विस्मयन्तः
Those heroes, without hesitation, sat there on the highest seats and footstools, entering in due order, those foremost of men, not at all astonished by the splendid seats.
उच्चावचं पार्थिवभोजनीयं पात्रीषु जाम्बूनदराजतीषु। दासाश्च दास्यश्च सुमृष्टवेषाः संभोजकाश्चाप्युपजह्रुरन्नम्
Food, both rich and simple, was brought in golden and silver vessels; and the servants, male and female, well adorned, and the attendants, served the meal.
ते तत्र भुक्त्वा पुरुषप्रवीरा यथात्मकामं सुभृशं प्रतीताः। उत्क्रम्य सर्वाणि वसूनि राज- न्सांग्रामिकं ते विविशुर्नृवीराः
Having eaten there to their heart’s content, those foremost of men, greatly satisfied, left behind all the food, O king, and those heroes entered the assembly hall.
तल्लक्षयित्वा द्रुपदस्य पुत्रा राजा च सर्वैः सह मन्त्रिमुख्यैः। समर्थयामासुरुपेत्य हृष्टाः कुन्तीसुतान्पार्थिवराजपुत्रान्
Noticing this, Drupada’s sons and the king himself, along with all the chief ministers, joyfully approached and recognized the sons of Kunti as royal princes.
तत आहूय पाञ्चाल्यो राजपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम्। परिग्रहेण ब्राह्मेण परिगृह्य महाद्युतिः
Then the son of Drupada summoned Yudhishthira, the royal prince, and, with due Brahmanical rites, received him with honor.
पर्यपृच्छददीनात्मा कुन्तीपुत्रं सुवर्चसम्। कथं जानीम भवतः क्षत्रियान्ब्राह्मणानुत
With a gentle heart, he inquired of the illustrious son of Kunti: ‘How shall we know whether you are Kshatriyas, Brahmanas, or—’
वैश्यान्वा गुणसंपन्नानथ वा शूद्रयोनिजान्। मायामास्थाय वा सिद्धांश्चरतः सर्वतोदिशम्
‘—or perhaps excellent Vaishyas, or even of Shudra birth, or accomplished beings moving everywhere by means of illusion?’
कृष्णाहेतोरनुप्राप्ता देवाः संदर्शनार्थिनः। ब्रवीतु नो भवान्सत्यं सन्देहो ह्यत्र नो महान्
‘For Krishnaa’s sake, gods have come seeking her hand. Tell us the truth, for we have great doubt in this matter.’
अपि नः संशयस्यान्ते मनः संतुष्टिमावहेत्। अपि नो भागधेयानि शुभानि स्युः परन्तप
‘May the end of our doubt bring satisfaction to our hearts. May good fortune be ours, O subduer of foes.’
इच्छया ब्रूहि तत्सत्यं सत्यं राजसु शोभते। इष्टापूर्तेन च तथा वक्तव्यमनृतं न तु
‘Speak the truth willingly, for truth befits kings. One should speak as one has done in sacrifice and charity, but never falsehood.’
श्रुत्वा ह्यमरसङ्काश तव वाक्यमरिंदम। ध्रुवं विवाहकरणमास्थास्यामि विधानतः
‘Hearing your words, O subduer of enemies, which are like those of immortals, I shall certainly proceed with the marriage according to the proper rites.’
मा राजन्विमना भूस्त्वं पाञ्चाल्य प्रीतिरस्तु ते। ईप्सितस्ते ध्रुवः कामः संवृत्तोऽयमसंशयम्
‘Do not be troubled in mind, O king; let there be joy for you, O son of Drupada. Your cherished desire is surely fulfilled, without doubt.’
वयं हि क्षत्रिया राजन्पाण्डोः पुत्रा महात्मनः। ज्येष्ठं मां विद्धि कौन्तेयं भीमसेनार्जुनाविमौ
‘We are Kshatriyas, O king, sons of the great-souled Pandu. Know me as the eldest, son of Kunti, and these are Bhimasena and Arjuna.’
आभ्यां तव सुता राजन्निर्जिता राजसंसदि। यमौ च तत्र कुन्ती च यत्र कृष्मा व्यवस्थिता
‘By these two, O king, your daughter was won in the royal assembly. There also are the twins and Kunti, where Krishnaa stands.’
व्येतु ते मानसं दुःखं क्षत्रियाः स्मो नरर्षभ। पद्मिनीव सुतेयं ते ह्रदादन्यह्रदं गता
‘Let your mind’s sorrow pass away, O bull among men; we are Kshatriyas. Your daughter, like a lotus, has gone from one lake to another.’
इति तथ्यं महाराज सर्वमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते। भवान्हि गुरुरस्माकं परमं च परायणम्
Thus, O great king, I speak to you all this as it truly is; for you are our teacher and our highest refuge.
ततः स द्रुपदो राजा हर्षव्याकुललोचनः। प्रतिवक्तुं मुदा युक्तो नाशकत्तं युधिष्टिरम्
Then King Drupada, his eyes filled with tears of joy, was so overcome with happiness that he could not at once reply to Yudhishthira.
