मद्देशे मंडलीकाश्च बहवः संति सांप्रतम्

इत्युक्त्वा वैष्णवास्त्रं तान्क्रुद्धः स च समादधत्

नानामल्लाः समाजग्मुस्तेन राज्ञैव सत्कृताः

उर्वीयाधिपतेः पुत्रः षोडशाब्दवया बली
The son of the lord of the earth, strong and sixteen years of age,
पितृष्वसृपतिं भूपं नत्वा नाम्नाऽभयो बली
Having bowed to the king, his maternal uncle, named Abhaya, who was mighty,
उवाच श्यालजं प्रेम्णा भवान्युद्धविशारदः
The expert in battle, with affection, spoke to his sister's son.
क्व भवान्वज्रसदृशः क्व सुतोऽयं सुकोमलः 3.3.10.
How can you, who are like a thunderbolt, be compared to this son, so tender?
इति श्रुत्वा नृपः स्यालो महीपतिरिति स्मृतः
Hearing this, the king, his uncle, remembered as the lord of the earth,
शृणु तत्कारणं भूप यथा ज्ञातो मया शिशुः
Listen, O king, to the reason how I came to know about the child.
पंडितांश्च समाहूय मुहूर्तं पृष्टवान्मुदा
He summoned the learned men and joyfully asked them about the auspicious moment.
लक्षणं वचनं प्राह महीराजमनुत्तमम्
They spoke of the marks and uttered the supreme words to the king of the earth.
कृष्णांशस्तस्य योग्योऽयं देशराजसुतोऽवरः
This son of the regional king is suitable for the Krishna lineage.
तच्छ्रुत्वा लक्षणो वीरः पूर्वे बर्हिष्मतीं प्रति
Hearing this, Lakṣaṇa, the heroic one, set out towards Barhiṣmatī as in former times.
उत्तरे नैमिषारण्यं स्वकीयं राष्ट्रमादधत्
He established his own kingdom in the northern Naimisha forest.
नागोत्सवे च भूपाल पंचम्यां च नभस्सिते
O king, during the festival of serpents and on the fifth day under the clear sky—
इति श्रुत्वा स कृष्णांशो वाक्छरेण प्रपीडितः। अभयं भुजयोः शीघ्रं गृहीत्वा सोऽयुधद्बली
Hearing this, Krishna's descendant, distressed by harsh words, swiftly seized safety with his arms and, being mighty, prepared for battle.
क्षणमात्रं रणं कृत्वा भूमिमध्ये तमक्षिपत् 3.3.10.
After fighting for only a moment, he threw him down in the midst of the battlefield.
मूर्च्छितं स्वसुतं ज्ञात्वा खड्गहस्तो महीपतिः
Knowing his own son had fallen unconscious, the king, sword in hand—
रुषाविष्टांश्च ताञ्ज्ञात्वा कृष्णांशो बलवत्तरः
Krishna's descendant, perceiving them to be filled with anger, became even more powerful.
पराजिते मल्लबले खड्गहस्तो महीपतिः
When the wrestlers' force was defeated, the king, sword in hand—
ज्ञात्वा तमीदृशं भूपं वारयामास भूपतिः
Recognizing that king to be thus, the lord of the earth restrained him.
नवाब्दांगे च कृष्णांशे चाह्लादाद्याः कुमारकाः
In the ninth year, among Krishna's descendants, the delighted young princes—
नमस्ते तात भूपाग्र्य सर्वानंदप्रदायक
Salutations to you, O foremost king, bestower of all joy.
इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तेषां तथेत्युक्त्वा महीपतिः
Hearing their words, the king replied, 'So be it.'
ददौ तेभ्यो मुदा युक्तो हरिणीगर्भसंभवान् त्वन्मुखेन श्रुतं सूत हरिणी वडवा यथा
Filled with joy, he gave them those born from the womb of the deer, as you have heard from my mouth, O Sūta, just as the mare from the deer.
भीष्मसिंहाय संप्राप्ता शक्राद्देवेशतो मुने
They came to Bhīṣmasiṃha from Indra, the lord of the gods, O sage.
दिव्यांगा भूषणापन्ना नभस्सलिलगामिनः सूत उवाच 3.3.10.
They were adorned with divine ornaments and moved through the sky and water. Sūta spoke.
सेवनं भास्करस्यैव कृतं च द्वादशाब्दिकम्
He performed service to the Sun for twelve years.
प्राह देव नमस्तुभ्यं यदि देयो वरस्त्वया
