करणाटकभूपस्य दंतवक्त्रस्य सा सुता
She is the daughter of Dantavaktra, the king of Karnata.
पुष्पभावेन ज्ञात्वाहं त्वां नयामि तदंतिके
Recognizing you by the sign of the flower, I will bring you to her presence.
आहाज्ञां देहि भूपाल यास्येहं कारणाटके
'Give the order, O king; I will go to Karnata.'
आयामि नाऽत्र सन्देहो यदि जीवयसे सुतम्
'I will go—there is no doubt—if you wish your son to live.'
हयारूढौ गतौ शीघ्रं दंतवक्त्रस्य पत्तने
Mounted on horses, they quickly went to the city of Dantavaktra.
बहुद्रव्यं ददौ तस्यै बुद्धिदक्षो विशारदः
The wise Buddhidaksha gave her much wealth.
प्रातःकाले तु सा वृद्धा गच्छती राजमन्दिरम्
In the morning, that old woman went to the royal palace.
पद्मावतीं च संप्राप्यैकांते मद्वचनं वद
Having reached Padmavati in private, she spoke my message.
यो दृष्टः पुरुषो रम्यस्त्वदर्थे समुपागतः
'A handsome man, seen for your sake, has come here.'
रुष्टा पद्मावती प्राह चंदनार्द्रांगुलीयिका 3.2.1.
Padmavati, angry, spoke while her fingers were moist with sandalwood.
अंगुलीभिः कपोलौ च तस्याः स्पृष्ट्वा ययौ गृहम्
Touching her cheeks with her fingers, she went home.
स मित्रं दुःखितं प्राह शृणु मित्र शुचं त्यज
He spoke to his sorrowful friend, 'Listen, friend, abandon your grief.'
त्वदर्थे ताडितं वक्षः कदा मित्रं भविष्यसि
For your sake, my chest was struck—when will you become my friend?
रजस्वलांते भो मित्र तवास्यं चुंबितास्म्यहम्
At the end of my menstruation, O friend, I kissed your face.
त्रिदिनांते तु सा वृद्धा पद्मावत्यै न्यवेदयेत्
At the end of three days, she, now aged, reported this to Padmavati.
तं भजस्वाद्य सुश्रोणि सफलं जीवनं कुरु
Unite with him today, O lovely-hipped one, and make your life fruitful.
गवाक्षद्वारि निष्कास्य तले पृष्ठे च ताडिता
Expelled through the window door, she was struck on her back and below.
प्रसन्नो बुद्धिदक्षश्च मित्रं प्राह शृणुष्व भोः
Pleased and clever, Mitra said, 'Listen, O friend!'
अर्द्धरात्रे तु संप्राप्य भज मां कामविह्वलाम्
Arrive at midnight and enjoy me, who am overcome with desire.
ययौ शीघ्रं महाकामी रमणीं तामरामयत् 3.2.1.
The great lover went swiftly and delighted the woman.
पद्मावतीं प्रियां प्राह शृणु वाक्यं वरानने
He spoke to his beloved Padmavati: 'Hear my words, beautiful-faced one.'
तन्मित्रं बुद्धिदक्षश्च किं नु तिष्ठति सांप्रतम्
That friend, Buddhidaksha, said, 'Where is she now?'
इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य निष्ठुरं कुलिशोपमम्
Hearing his words, harsh as a thunderbolt,
तदा तु बुद्धिदक्षश्च चित्रगुप्तप्रपूजकः
Then Buddhidaksha, devoted to the worship of Chitragupta,
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे प्राप्तो भूपतिस्त्वरयान्वितः
Meanwhile, the king arrived, filled with urgency.
कस्मान्न खादितं मित्र भोजनं मत्प्रियाकृतम्
Why have you not eaten, friend, the food prepared by my beloved?
भुक्त्वा स मरणं प्राप्तः स दृष्ट्वा विस्मितो नृपः
Having eaten, he met his death; seeing this, the king was astonished.
मित्र गच्छ गृहं शीघ्रं मया त्यक्ता च पापिनी
Friend, go home quickly; the sinful woman has been abandoned by me.
तदलंकारमाहृत्य त्रिशूलं कुरु जानुनि
Bring that ornament and place the trident at her knee.
इति श्रुत्वा ययौ भूपस्तथा कृत्वा समागतः 3.2.1.
Hearing this, the king went, did so, and returned.
