दिव्यावसथरम्येषु वेलाकूलेषु पार्थिवः
In splendid divine dwellings and on the riverbanks, the king resided.
ततस्त्रयोदशे वर्षे तस्या गर्भोऽभवन्महान्
Then, in the thirteenth year, she bore a great pregnancy.
तद्भेदाहतकुंभेषु बीजप्रारोहणान्नराः
From the breaking of the vessel, as the seeds sprouted, people emerged.
पंचाशत्संख्यया जाता उपसर्गादिवर्जिताः
Fifty in number were born, free from any defect or affliction.
तेषां पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च बभूवुः सुरसत्तमाः
Their sons and grandsons were born, O best of the gods.
हयैरन्यैर्गजैरन्यैः क्रोधांधाः कौरवा इव
With other horses, with other elephants, blinded by anger like the Kauravas.
सपदातिगजारोहाः सांतःपुरयुगेच्छया 4.3.
With foot soldiers and elephant riders, together with the women of the palace, according to their wishes.
सासिसबलविस्ताराः सदर्पाः समहोच्छ्रयाः
With armies spread wide, proud, and possessing great stature.
संदृश्य नारदीयैषा विनष्टं स्वकुलं रणे
Seeing this, O Narada, their own lineage was destroyed in battle.
हा दैव हा विधे पाप हा कृतान्त नमस्कृत
Alas, fate! Alas, destiny! Alas, sin! Alas, death, whom I salute.
इत्युक्त्वा स्वमुरोहस्तैर्जघान भृशदुःखिता
Having spoken thus, she struck her own chest with her hands, greatly distressed.
सोऽपि राजा विषण्णोऽसौ निर्विण्णः शोकसागरे
That king too was dejected, submerged in an ocean of sorrow.
विषण्णो मंत्रिभिः सार्धं वृद्धशोकेन संयुतः
He was despondent, together with his ministers, afflicted by deep grief.
द्विजवेषपरिच्छन्न उपविष्टः सुखासने
Disguised in the attire of a Brahmin, he sat on a comfortable seat.
किं रोदनेन बहुना युवयोः क्लेशकारिणा
What is the use of much weeping by you both, which only brings suffering?
शोभने यादृशः शोकः कृतः संसारसागरे
O beautiful one, such sorrow has been created in the ocean of worldly existence.
पुरंदरसहस्राणि चक्रवर्तिशतानि च 4.3.
Thousands of Indras and hundreds of emperors have existed.
येऽपि शोषयितुं शक्ताः समुद्रं ग्राहसंकुलम्
Even those who are able to dry up the ocean filled with monsters,
कुर्युश्च करयुग्मेन चूर्णं मेरुं महीतले
And who could, with their hands, grind Mount Meru to powder on the earth,
ऊद्धर्तुं धरणीसंज्ञां ग्रहीतुं चन्द्रभास्करौ
Who could lift up the earth, seize the moon and the sun,
दुर्गस्त्रिकूटः परिखाः समुद्रा रक्षांसि योधा धनदाच्च वित्तम्
Fortresses, triple peaks, moats, oceans, guards, warriors, and wealth from Kubera,
संग्रामे गजतुरगसमाकुलेऽपि वादादग्नौ वा गतविवरे महोदधौ वा
Even in battle, amidst elephants and horses, or in the fire of dispute, or in the depths of the great ocean,
पातालमाविशतु यातु सुरेन्द्रलोकमारोहतु क्षितिधराधिपतिं सुमेरुम्
Let him enter the netherworld, let him ascend to the realm of the gods, or let him reach the lord of the mountains, Sumeru.
रोदिति कश्चिदथाश्रुधौताननगुरुतरशोकविह्वलः
Someone weeps, his face washed with tears, overwhelmed by intense sorrow.
गायति हृदयहारि सुखनिर्भरमायतविस्तृताऽधरोऽधिकम्
Another sings, his lips wide and full, his song overflowing with happiness, captivating the heart.
इत्येवं धर्ममुद्दिश्य विष्णुः संसारचेष्टितम्
Thus, referring to dharma, Vishnu described the activities of worldly existence.
इत्युक्ता चारुसर्वांगी स बभूवाचलः पुमान् 4.3.
Having been addressed, the beautiful woman became motionless, like a man turned to stone.
सोऽपि राजा ददर्शाथ तं समंत्रिपुरोहितः
Then the king, together with his ministers and priests, saw him.
नारदं मुनिशार्दूलं जटाभारभयानकम्
They saw Narada, the foremost among sages, terrifying with his mass of matted hair.
शिखा कमण्डलुधरं वीणादण्डकरं तथा पादुकाभ्यां स्थितं तीरे सरसो ब्राह्मणासने
With a topknot, holding a water-pot, and carrying the staff of the vina, standing with sandals at the edge of the lake, on a Brahmin's seat.
