Listen, O noble one, to the sacred account of Hamsaprapatana, a holy place renowned throughout the three worlds. Its glory endures as long as the sun and moon shine in the heavens, and those who are connected to it are honored in the celestial realms for all time. Hear further the fruits awaiting one who surrenders his life at this hallowed spot: such a soul dwells in heaven together with his ancestors. A pure-hearted person who worships there attains the very world of Brahma, and for ten million thousand years, he is celebrated and revered in the heavenly realms. Know without doubt that Hamsaprapatana is a field of perfection. In heaven, one who has reached there even delivers the gods themselves; for this reason, it is called the triple-path. For thousands upon thousands of years, such a soul is honored in the world of the gods. This sacred place grants liberation to all beings, even to those burdened with the greatest sins. Consider also the gateway of the Ganga, the holy Prayaga, and the sacred confluence where the Ganga meets the ocean. For those who seek liberation, there is no path equal to that of the Ganga. Even if she has fallen from the favor of Shiva, the Ganga remains ever-auspicious and the remover of all sins. In the Dvapara age, Kurukshetra is supreme; but in the Kali age, the Ganga surpasses all. There is nothing else in Kali Yuga that can destroy accumulated sin, so difficult to remove, as she does. One who dies at her banks is born in heaven and does not see the torments of hell. In the auspicious month of Magha, people journey to the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna. At Prayaga, bathing for three days during this month brings extraordinary fruit: even if a person is healthy and whole, with all senses intact, he is honored in heaven for as many thousands of years as the moon, freed from Rahu’s grasp, remains without blemish. After enjoying abundant pleasures in heaven, he returns again to that sacred place. For sixty thousand and six hundred years, he is honored in the celestial worlds. After his time there, he is born into a prosperous family on earth. For a hundred thousand years, he is again honored in heaven, and after enjoying all delights, he returns once more to that holy tirtha. Even birds who partake of its blessings gain merit; after their time, they take birth as righteous kings and, after enjoying pleasures, return yet again to the sacred place. There is also the revered tirtha called Ṛṇapramocana, regarded as supreme among holy places. One who visits there attains the world of the sun and is forever freed from all debts. The blessed and virtuous have gathered where the Yamuna flows. Merely uttering her name, even from a thousand yojanas away, destroys sin. Whoever gives up their life there attains the highest state. Those who die after bathing in her waters ascend to heaven and are not reborn. Before the Lord of Dharma, all great sins are washed away without doubt. The sages have declared that all these holy places are established at Prayaga. In heaven, on earth, and in the sky, all these are known as Jāhnavī, the Ganga. Know this as the field of accomplishment, situated on the banks of the sacred river. There, the Lord of the Banyan tree always resides; that is the true holy place, the forest of austerity. This sacred account should be recited in the ear of a dear friend or a devoted disciple, for hearing and sharing these glories brings immense merit and sanctity to all who listen.
