Through the powerful influence of that sacred place, the sage attained all manner of excellent wealth. This holy site became renowned as Pramaṃthura, celebrated as an abode of joy and delight. Once, while residing there, the wise sage—having fully conquered his senses—found himself deeply pleased. In his satisfaction, a divine presence addressed him: “O knower of dharma, choose a boon without delay and free from envy.” The sage replied with humility, “Because of a king’s curse, my body has become exceedingly foul-smelling.” Perceiving this with devotion, the sage performed a consecration ceremony. Using the pure water of that sacred place, he made a solemn vow, following the proper rites and with great reverence. Transformed by this act, the sage spoke sweetly, joining his palms in respect: “O omniscient one, let this place attain the fame it truly deserves. By your grace, O sage among Brāhmins, please act so that this may come to pass.” With a serene heart, the sage addressed the Yaksha in gentle words: “This sacred place shall henceforth be known as Dhanayaksha. Here, those who bathe will gain beauty of body and supreme assurance. Therefore, all who seek merit should bathe here with devotion and effort. “One should give gifts with faith and according to one’s ability, and especially worship the goddess Lakshmi. By such worship, O virtuous one, even the nine treasures are honored: Mahapadma, Padma, Shankha, Makara, and Kacchapa—all these treasures will have their presence in the pool here, O sinless one. “Within these waters, one should perform the worship of the treasures and of Lakshmi. Offerings of many kinds of food and diverse garments should be made. Gold and other valuables, too, should be given according to one’s means, always avoiding deceit about wealth. In particular, fruits and gold should be offered. “Bathing here on the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight yields abundant spiritual results. In the month of Magha, on that very day, an annual pilgrimage should be observed. Let the devotee pray, ‘May the world, from Brahma down to the smallest blade of grass, be satisfied.’ “O Yaksha, one who acts thus is never deluded. After bathing here, you must perform the worship at the proper place. The mantra for worship is: ‘Salutation to Pramatharaja.’ O Yaksha, the worship of the treasures and of the Lakshmis is especially meant for you. “One who seeks wealth will obtain wealth; one who desires a son will obtain a son. But if anyone, out of delusion, neglects to perform the bathing, O Yaksha—” Thus, having granted these boons, the great sage Vishvamitra brought about a transformation. From that time onward, the place gained supreme renown. It became adorned on all sides with clusters of divine jewels and shone with brilliant radiance. To the north of the abode of the Yaksha of wealth, in that very direction, dwells the ever-resident sage Vasishtha, a true treasure-house of austerity. Here, after performing the Śrāddha rites, one should especially bathe with unwavering attention. In this sacred region, the presence of the revered sage Vāmadeva is also found, O sinless one. The devoted wife, Arundhati, is especially worthy of worship here. All desired fruits may be attained at this place—of this there is no doubt. In the month of Bhādra, on the fifth day of the bright fortnight, with steadfast observance, these holy acts should be performed, ensuring the fulfillment of every righteous desire.
