महादेवतिथौ ब्राह्मे मुहूर्ते मणिकर्णिके
On the great deity's day, at the Brahma muhurta, in Maṇikarṇikā—
सहस्रकमलैस्तस्माद्भविष्यति मम प्रिया
From a thousand lotuses, my beloved will arise.
अन्यं वरं प्रयच्छामि शृणु विष्णो वचो मम
I grant you another boon; listen, O Vishnu, to my words.
उपवासं दिवा कुर्यात्सायंकाले तवार्चनम्
One should fast during the day and worship you in the evening.
ग्राह्या तु हरिपूजायां रात्रिव्याप्ता चतुर्दशी
For the worship of Hari, the fourteenth night that spans the night is to be accepted.
सहस्रकमलैर्विष्णुरादौ यैः पूजितो नरैः
Vishnu, who was first worshipped by men with a thousand lotuses—
सायं स्नात्वा पंचनदे बिंदुमाधवमर्चयेत्
In the evening, having bathed in the five rivers, one should worship Bindumadhava.
रुद्रकांच्यां ततः स्नात्वा प्रणवेशं समर्चयेत्
Then, after bathing at Rudrakanchi, one should worship the Lord of Pranava.
रेतोदके ततः स्नात्वा केदारेशं समर्चयेत्
Then, after bathing in the water of semen, one should worship Kedaresha.
जाह्नव्यां च ततः स्नात्वा संगमेशं प्रपूजयेत् 2.4.35.
Then, after bathing in the Ganges, one should worship Sangamesha.
एवं तस्मै वरान्दत्त्वा ह्यंतर्धानं ययौ शिवः
Having granted him boons in this way, Shiva then disappeared.
कलौ दशसहस्राणि विष्णुस्त्यजति मेदिनीम्
In the Kali age, Vishnu will abandon the earth for ten thousand years.
कार्तिक्यां पूर्णिमायां तु कुर्यात्त्रैपुरमुत्सवम्
On the full moon of Kartika, one should perform the festival of Tripura.
* त्रिपुरो नाम दैत्येंद्रः प्रयागे तप आस्थितः
Tripura, the name of the lord of demons, undertook austerities at Prayaga.
देवासुरमनुष्येभ्यो न ते मृत्युर्भविष्यति
He will not meet death from gods, demons, or humans.
त्रिपुराख्यं विमानं तमारुह्य भुवनत्रयम्
Ascending the aerial city called Tripura, he traversed the three worlds.
त्रिपुरं घातयामास बाणेनैकेन शत्रुहा
The destroyer of enemies slew Tripura with a single arrow.
तस्मिन्दिने सर्वदेवैर्दीपा दत्ता हराय च
On that day, all the gods gave lamps, and also to Hara.
विंशतिः सप्तशतकाः सहिता दीपवर्तयः
Twenty and seven hundred lamp wicks together—
पौर्णमास्यां तु संध्यायां कर्तव्यस्त्रिपुरोत्सवः 2.4.35.
On the evening of the full moon, the festival of Tripura should be performed.
कीटाः पतंगा मशकाश्च वृक्षा जले स्थले ये विचरंति जीवाः
Insects, moths, mosquitoes, and trees, and all living beings who move in water or on land—
कार्यस्तस्मात्पौर्णमास्यां त्रिपुराय महोत्सवः
Therefore, on the full moon, a great festival should be held for Tripura.
सप्त जन्म भवेद्विप्रो धनाढ्यो वेदपारगः
For seven births, one becomes a brāhmaṇa, wealthy, and accomplished in the Vedas.
ब्रह्मोवाच यास्तिस्रस्तिथयः पुण्या अंतिके शुक्लपक्षके
Brahmā said: The three auspicious lunar days that are near the bright fortnight—
अंतिपुष्करिणी संज्ञा सर्वपापक्षयावहा
are known as Antipuṣkariṇī, and they bring about the destruction of all sins.
तिथिष्वेतासु सः स्नानात्पूर्णमेव फलं लभेत्
By bathing on these lunar days, one attains the complete result.
चतुर्दश्यां सयज्ञाश्च देवा जंतून्पुनंति हि
On the fourteenth day, the gods together with the sacrifices purify the living beings.
ब्रह्मघ्नान्वा सुरापान्वा सर्वाञ्जंतून्पुनंति हि
They purify all living beings, whether slayers of brāhmaṇas or drinkers of liquor.
रौरवं नरकं याति यावदिंद्राश्चतुर्दश
One goes to the Raurava hell for as long as the fourteen Indras reign.
तेन पूर्णफलं प्राप्य मोदते विष्णुमंदिरे
Having attained the full result by that, one rejoices in the abode of Viṣṇu.
