इह वंशं परिस्थाप्य भुक्त्वा सर्व सुखानि च
Having established a lineage here and enjoyed all pleasures,
सर्वलोकहितार्थाय तदाख्याहि महामुने
For the welfare of all worlds, declare that, O great sage.
धिषणाधिपतेरास्यं विबुधा व्यालुलोकिरे
The gods gazed upon the face of the lord of wisdom.
वाक्पतिरुवाच धन्योसि कृतकृत्योसि मान्योसि महता मपि
The lord of speech spoke: You are blessed, accomplished, and worthy of honor even among the great.
प्रत्याश्रमं प्रतिनगं प्रत्यरण्यं तपोधनाः
The ascetics, in every hermitage, every mountain, and every forest,
तपोलक्ष्मीस्त्वयीहास्ति ब्राह्मतेजस्त्वयि स्थिरम्
The wealth of asceticism is present in you; the brilliance of Brahma is steadfast within you.
पतिव्रतेयं कल्याणी लोपामुद्रा सधर्मिणी
This virtuous Lopamudra, your wife, is devoted and auspicious.
पतिव्रतास्वरुंधत्या सावित्र्याप्यनसूयया
She is equal to the devoted women Svarundhati, Savitri, and Anasuya.
मेनया च सुनीत्या च संज्ञया स्वाहया तथा
Also to Menā, Sunīti, Saṃjñā, and Svāhā.
भुंक्ते भुक्ते त्वयि मुने तिष्ठति त्वयि तिष्ठति
She eats only after you, O sage; she remains only where you remain.
अनलंकृतमात्मानं तव नो दर्शयेत्क्वचित् 4.1.4.
She would never show herself unadorned before you.
न च ते नाम गृह्णीयात्तवायुष्यविवृद्धये
Nor would she utter your name, for the sake of increasing your lifespan.
आक्रुष्टापि न चाक्रोशेत्ताडितापि प्रसीदति
Even when insulted, she does not shout; even when struck, she remains gracious.
आहूता गृहकार्याणि त्यक्त्वा गच्छति सत्वरम्
When called, she promptly leaves household tasks and comes.
न चिरं तिष्ठति द्वारि न द्वारमुपसेवते
She does not linger at the door, nor does she frequent the doorway.
पूजोपकरणं सर्वमनुक्ता साधयेत्स्वयम्
She herself completes all the items needed for worship, without being told.
प्रतीक्षमाणावसरं यथाकालोचितं हि यत्
She waits for the proper moment, and acts according to the appropriate time and circumstance.
सेवते भर्त्तुरुच्छिष्टमिष्टमन्नं फलादिकम्
She serves her husband's leftovers, desired food, fruits, and the like.
अविभज्य न चाश्नीयाद्देवपित्रतिथिष्वपि
She does not eat without sharing, even among gods, ancestors, or guests.
संयतोपस्करादक्षा हृष्टा व्यय पराङ्मुखी
Restrained with utensils, skilled, joyful, and indifferent to expenditure.
दूरतो वर्जयेदेषा समाजोत्सवदर्शनम् 4.1.4.
She should avoid, from a distance, attending gatherings and festivals.
सुखसुप्तं सुखासीनं रममाणं यदृच्छया
One who is happily sleeping, comfortably seated, or enjoying herself as she wishes—
स्त्रीधर्मिणी त्रिरात्रं तु स्वमुखं नैव दर्श येत्
A woman, observing her wifely duties, should not show her face for three nights.
सुस्नाता भर्तृवदनमीहतेन्यस्य न क्वचित्
Even when well-bathed, she should never approach her husband's face with desire for another.
हरिद्रां कुंकुमं चैव सिंदूर कज्जलं तथा
Turmeric, saffron, vermilion, and also collyrium—
केशसंस्कारकबरी करकर्णादिभूषणम्
Hair adornments, hair arrangements, and ornaments for the hands, ears, and so on—
न रजक्या न हैतुक्या तथा श्रमणया न च
Not by a washerwoman, nor without reason, nor by an ascetic should these be done.
भर्तृविद्वेषिणीं नारीं नैषा संभाषते क्वचित्
She should never converse with a woman who is hostile to her husband.
नोलूखले न मुसले न वर्द्धन्यां दृषद्यपि
Not with a mortar, not with a pestle, nor with a grinding stone should she be seen.
विना व्यवायसमयं प्रागल्भ्यं न क्वचिच्चरेत्
Except at the time of union, she should never display boldness.
