न कलेरुपतापोऽत्र नासुरैरपि पीडनम्
Here, there is neither the distress of the Kali age nor oppression even by the Asuras.
पूर्वजन्मकृतैः पुण्यैर्लब्धवीर्यमहोदयः
By the merit of good deeds from previous births, you have attained great strength and prosperity.
शिवेन दत्ता विभवास्तव पूर्वतपोबलात्
The riches were given to you by Shiva, due to the power of your previous austerities.
अत्र धर्मात्मनां वासः शिवभक्तिमतां सदा
Here is always the dwelling of those devoted to righteousness and of the worshippers of Shiva.
ऐश्वर्य्यमतुलं प्राप्तो बलमन्यद्दुरासदम् 1.3.1.10.
You have attained incomparable sovereignty and another power that is difficult to overcome.
मया कन्या पुनर्दृष्टा विशेषादबला मता
The maiden has again been seen by me, and she is considered especially powerless.
अथवा युक्तिभेदैस्त्वं शास्त्रैर्वा शिवसंमतैः
Or else, by various arguments or by scriptures approved by Shiva, you—
येन लोकान्समस्तांस्त्वं बाधसे बलगर्वितः
—by which, proud of your strength, you trouble all the worlds.
आनीय सकलं सैन्यमग्रे स्थापय सायुधम्
Bring forth your entire army, fully armed, and place it at the front.
मच्छस्त्र परिकृत्तस्य ससैन्यस्य तवायुषः
When your life, along with your army, is cut down by my weapon—
वार्यमाणोऽपि पूर्वेण कर्मणा प्रेरितो जनः
Even when restrained by former deeds, a person is driven on by karma.
त्वयापि करुणावाक्यं वक्तव्यं किल भूरिभिः
You too must indeed speak many words of compassion.
इति गौर्या समादिष्टा वाचं कपिमुखो मुनिः
Thus instructed by Gauri, the sage with the face of a monkey spoke.
सोऽपि सर्वं समाकर्ण्य क्रोधवेगसमाकुलः
He too, having listened to everything, was agitated by a surge of anger.
अथ सैन्यं निजं सर्वं समाहूय दुराशयः 1.3.1.10.
Then, summoning his entire army, the wicked-minded one—
युगांतसमयोद्वेलचतुरर्णवसंनिभम्
It resembled the four oceans swelling at the time of the end of an age.
अथ गौरी समालोक्य दैत्यानां सैन्यमद्भुतम्
Then Gauri, seeing the wondrous army of the Daityas—
एकपादाक्षिचरणा लंबकर्णपयोधराः
They had one foot, one eye, one leg, with hanging ears and breasts.
अहं ग्रसामि सकलमपर्याप्तमिदं मम
I consume all this, which is insufficient for me.
किं त्वयात्र पुनः कार्यं वीक्ष्य त्वं तिष्ठ केवलम्
But what more is there for you to do here? You should simply stand by and watch.
तेषां कथयतां शंखं गणानां योगिनीगणैः
As they spoke, the conch was sounded by the hosts of Yoginīs.
आलोक्य तां तथारूपामापतंस्तस्य सैनिकाः
Seeing her, in such a terrifying form, advancing, his soldiers—
ववृषुः शस्त्रवर्षाणि दैत्याः प्रतिदिगन्तरम्
The Daityas unleashed showers of weapons in every direction.
रथानां वारणेंद्राणां हयानां लक्षकोटिभिः
With hundreds of millions of chariots, lordly elephants, and horses,
मातरो विविधाकारा डाकिन्यो योगिनीगणाः 1.3.1.10.
The Mothers, of various forms, the Ḍākinīs, and the hosts of Yoginīs—
देव्या सृष्टेन सैन्येन दुर्जयेन महासुराः
The great Asuras faced the army created by the Goddess, which was impossible to defeat.
देवी च सायुधा दृष्टा ज्वलंती निहतासुरैः
The Goddess was seen, armed, blazing, surrounded by slain Asuras.
यदा कैलासशिखरात्प्राप्ता कर्त्तुं तपो भुवम्
When she descended from the summit of Kailāsa to perform austerities on earth,
दुंदुभिः सत्यवत्याख्या तथा चान्तवती परा
There was Dundubhi, known as Satyavatī, and also Antavatī, the supreme one.
देव्या सृष्टा च चामुंडा दंष्ट्रावलयभीपणा
Caṇḍā and Muṇḍā were created by the Goddess, with terrifying fangs and bracelets of teeth.
