For without him there is no light from the moon, sun, or fire.
O god! O sage! O perfected one! O seer! O night-wanderer!
Where have you gone, dear one? Whom have you found, O Lord?
Do you have any provisions with you, or anything at all in any direction?
Do you reside anywhere? How do you obtain water, or peace of mind?
In this way, speaking compassionately to each other,
Those living beings who dwell within the cavities of the earth,
For them, there is no sun, no moon, nor any other great planets.
By what light do they see the level and uneven places?
Who, moving equally, grants hundreds of desires of the mind?
On a level bed, in water, on a boat, in illness, a good attendant,
A friend in a foreign land, shade in heat, smokeless fire in cold,
And always, for all, the giver of hundreds of desires of the mind.
Speaking thus, O Vyasa, they heard sweet words.
They do not know where he is situated, nor who is speaking—Keshava, the Lord.
One gift, always proper, is remembered as equal to a wish-fulfilling gem.
That should be given by all; listen to this truth carefully.
By whom the excellent lamp was produced, by which this darkness was destroyed,
Unwavering, pure, pleasing, stable, radiant like the sun—by that lamp's light, Gokarna attained peace.
All the serpents, headed by Shesha, did not rise up, even in groups.
On mountains, in oceans, in forests, and in groves,
enjoying the five divine roots mixed with milk,
food made from moon-grown rice, and betel prepared in seven ways,
on splendid beds and in delightful forest regions,
they all delighted together, embracing one another.
Freed from the fear of the sun’s heat and the chill of moonbeams,
for the sun’s heat brings burning, and the moon’s rays bring coolness.
They made golden lamps and gave them again to the twice-born.
There they live happily, with pleasures eight times greater than those of heaven.
This secret I have revealed to you out of compassion.
