सापराधां यता दासीं कृत्वा शीघ्रमिहानय
Make her, though faultless, a slave; bring her here quickly.
स हन्तव्यो ऽविचार्यैव यदि हि स्यात् पितामहः
He must be slain without hesitation, even if he were the ancestor.
वृतः षड्भिर्महातेजा विन्ध्यं किरिमुपाद्रवत्
Surrounded by six mighty ones, he approached Mount Vindhya.
न चेद् बलान्नयिष्यामि केशाकर्षणविह्वलाम्
If she does not come by force, I will drag her by her hair.
तत्र किं ह्यबला कुर्याद् यथेच्छसि तथा कुरु
What could a powerless woman do there? Do as you wish.
सम्भ्यधावत् त्वरितो गदामादाय वीर्यवान्
He rushed forward swiftly, taking up his mace, full of strength.
सबलं भस्मसाच्चक्रे शुष्कमग्निरिवेन्धनम्
With his forces, he was reduced to ashes, like dry wood by fire.
सबलं भस्मसान्नीतं कौशिक्या वीक्ष्य दानवम्
Seeing the demon and his forces turned to ashes by Kauśikī,
अथादिदेश बलिनौ चण्डमुण्डौ महासुरौ
Then he commanded the powerful Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa, great demons.
तेषां च सैन्यमतुलं गजाश्वरथसंकुलम्
Their army was unmatched, crowded with elephants, horses, and chariots.
तदायान्तं रिपुबलं दृष्ट्वा कोटिशतावरम्
Seeing the enemy forces approaching, numbering in the hundreds of millions,
कांश्चित् करप्रहारेण कांश्चिदास्येन लीलया
Some were struck by her hand, some by her mouth, playfully.
ते वध्यमानाः सिंहेन गिरिकन्दरवासिना
They were slain by the lion dwelling in the mountain caves.
तावार्त्तं स्वबलं दृष्ट्वा कोपप्रस्फुरिताधरौ
Seeing their own forces afflicted, their lips trembled with anger.
तावापतन्तौ रौद्रौ वै दृष्ट्वा क्रोधपरिप्लुता
Seeing those two fierce ones falling, filled with wrath,
काली करालवदना निःसृता योगिनी शुबा
Kālī, the auspicious yoginī with a terrifying face, emerged.
संशुष्कगात्रा रुधिराप्लुताङ्गीनरेन्द्रमूर्ध्ना स्रजमुद्वहन्ती
Her limbs were withered, her body smeared with blood, and she wore a garland of kings' heads.
न्यषूदयद् भृशं क्रुद्धा सरताश्वगजान् रिपून्
Greatly enraged, she fiercely struck down the enemy horses, chariots, and elephants.
कुञ्जरं सह यन्त्रेण प्रतिक्षेप मुके ऽम्बिका
Ambikā hurled an elephant along with its driver into her mouth.
समं योधेन वदने क्षिप्य चर्वयते ऽम्बिका
Seizing a warrior, Ambikā cast him into her mouth and chewed him up.
पादेनाक्रम्य चैवान्यं प्रेषयामास मृत्यवे
Stepping on another with her foot, she sent him to death.
रुरुर्दृष्ट्वा प्रदुद्राव तं चण्डि ददृशे स्वयम्
Seeing this, Ruru fled in terror, but Caṇḍī herself beheld him.
स पपात हतो भूम्यां छिन्नमूल इव द्रुमः
He fell slain to the ground, like a tree whose root has been cut.
कोशमुत्कर्तयामास कर्णादिचरणान्तिकम्
She tore open his armor and cast it from his ear to his feet.
एका न बन्धमगमत् तामुत्पाट्याक्षिपद् भुवि
Only one was not bound; she seized her and threw her to the ground.
कुष्णार्धमर्धशुक्लं च धारयन्ती स्वकं वपुः
Her own form bore a hue half dark, half pale.
तस्या नाम तदा चक्रे चण्डमारीति विश्रुतम्
At that time, she was given the renowned name Caṇḍamārī.
स्वयं हि मारयिष्यामि तावानेतुं त्वमर्हसि
"I myself will slay them; you must bring them here."
प्रदुद्रुवतुर्भयार्त्तौ दिशमाश्रित्य दक्षिणाम्
Terrified, the two fled, taking refuge in the southern direction.
साधिरुह्य महावेगं रासभं गरुडोपमम्
She mounted a swift ass, like Garuḍa in speed.
