Vayu Purana

कृमयो मांसमादाय यास्यन्ति तु महीं तव। ततः पादं महाप्राज्ञ पुनः संप्राप्स्यसे सुखम् ।। २२.

Worms, taking your flesh, will go to the earth; after that, O greatly wise one, you will regain your foot and happiness.

कृतमेवं वचः सत्यं मातुस्तव भविष्यति। शापस्य परिहारेण त्वं च त्राता भविष्यसि ।। २२.

Thus, your mother's words will indeed come true; by the removal of the curse, you too will be protected.

आदित्यस्त्वब्रवीत् संज्ञां किमर्थं तनयेषु वै। तुल्येष्वप्यधिकः स्नेह एकस्मिन् क्रियते त्वया ।। २२.

But the Sun said to Saṃjñā: 'For what reason, even though your children are equal, do you show greater affection to one?'

सा तत्परिहरन्ती वै नाचचक्षे विवस्वतः। आत्मना स समाधाय योगन्तथ्यमपश्यत ।। २२.

She, wishing to avoid that, did not tell Vivasvat; but he, concentrating himself, saw the truth through the power of yoga.

तां शप्तुकामो भगवान् नाशाय कुपितः प्रभुः । सा तत्सर्वं यथातत्त्वमाचचक्षे विवस्वतः ।। २२.

The blessed lord, wishing to curse her and angry, sought to destroy her; but she told Vivasvat everything as it truly was.

विवस्वानथ तच्छ्रुत्वा क्रुद्धस्त्वष्टारमभ्ययात्। त्वष्टा तु तं यथान्यायमर्चयित्वा विभावसुम् ।। २२.

Then, having heard that, Vivasvat, angry, went to Tvaṣṭṛ; and Tvaṣṭṛ, according to custom, honored the blazing one.

निर्द्दग्धुकामं रोषेण सान्त्वयामास वै शनैः। तवातितेजसा युक्तमिदं रूपं न शोभते ।। २२.

Desiring to burn him in his wrath, he gently appeased him: 'This form, endowed with excessive brilliance, does not suit you.'

असहन्ती तु तत् संज्ञा वने चरति शाद्वले। द्रक्ष्यते तां भवानद्य स्वां भार्यां शुभचारिणीम् ।। २२.

Unable to endure that, Saṃjñā wanders in the green forest; today you will see her, your own wife, who conducts herself virtuously.

श्लाघ्यां यौवनसम्पन्नां योगमास्थाय गोपते। अनुकूलं भवेदेवं यदि स्यात् समयो मतः ।। २२.

Praiseworthy, endowed with youth, having resorted to yoga, O protector of cows, let it be favorable thus, if the time is deemed proper.

रूपं विवर्त्तयेदन्ते आद्यं श्रेष्ठमरिन्दम। रूपं विवस्वतस्त्वासीत्तिर्यगूर्ध्वमधस्तथा ।। २२.

At the end, the original, excellent form will be transformed, O subduer of foes; the form of Vivasvat was in all directions—across, above, and below.

तेनासौ व्रीडितो देवो रूपेण तु दिवस्पतिः। तस्मात्त्वष्टा स चक्रं तु बहुमेने महातपाः ।। २२.

Because of that, the god, lord of the day, was ashamed of his form; therefore, Tvaṣṭṛ, the great ascetic, considered making a disc.

अनुज्ञातस्ततस्त्वष्टा रूपनिर्वर्त्तनाय तु। ततोऽभ्युपगमात्त्वष्टा मार्त्तण्डस्य विवस्वतः ।। २२.

Then, permitted, Tvaṣṭṛ set about creating a new form; and so, by his approach, Tvaṣṭṛ came to Mārtaṇḍa Vivasvat.

भ्रमिमारोप्य तत्तेजः शातयामास तस्य वै। तत्तु निर्भासितन्तेजस्तेजसापहृतेन तु ।। २२.

Placing a whirling device, he cut away that brilliance of his; and that radiance, having been removed, shone forth separately.

कान्तात् कान्ततरं द्रष्टुमशुभं शुशुभे ततः। ददर्श योगमास्थाय स्वाम्भार्यां वडवां तथा ।। २२.

Then, desiring to behold one more beautiful than his beloved, he entered into yoga and saw a mare in his own wife.

अदृश्यां सर्वभूतानां तेजसा नियमेन च। अश्वरूपेण मार्त्तण्डस्तां मुखे समभावयत् ।। २२.

Invisible to all beings, by his radiance and will, the Sun, taking the form of a horse, placed himself in her mouth.

मैथुनाय विचेष्टन्ती परपुंसोपशङ्कया। सा तन्निरधमच्छुक्रं नासिकाभ्यां विवस्वतः ।। २२.

She, resisting union out of suspicion of another male, expelled that inferior seed of Vivasvat through her nostrils.

देवौ तस्मादजायेतामश्विनौ भिषजां वरौ । नासत्यश्चैव दस्रश्च स्मृतौ द्वावश्विनाविति ।। २२.

From that, the two gods were born—the Ashvins, best among healers; they are remembered as Nasatya and Dasra, the twin Ashvins.

मार्त्तण्डस्य सुतावेतावष्टमस्य प्रजापतेः। तान्तु रूपेण कान्तेन दर्शयामास भास्करः ।। २२.

These two are the sons of Martanda, the eighth Prajapati; the radiant Sun revealed himself to her in a pleasing form.

सा तं दृष्ट्वात्तदा भार्या तुतोष च मुमोह च। यमस्तु तेन शापेन भृशम्पीडितमानसः ।। २२.

Seeing him then, the wife was pleased and fainted; Yama, afflicted in mind by that curse, suffered greatly.

धर्म्मेण रञ्जयामास धर्म्मराजस्ततस्तु सः । सोऽलभत् कर्मणा तेन शुभेन परमद्युतिः ।। २२.

Then, the king of righteousness delighted her by virtue; through that righteous act, he attained supreme splendor.

पितॄणामाधिपत्यञ्च लोकपालत्वमेव च। मनुः प्रजापतिश्चैव सावर्णिः स महायशाः ।। २२.

He obtained lordship over the ancestors and the office of world-guardian; Manu, the illustrious Sāvarṇi Prajāpati, as well.

भाव्यसौ नागते तस्मिन् मनुः सावर्णिकेऽन्तरे। मेरुपृष्ठे सुरम्ये वै अद्यापि चरते प्रभुः ।। २२.

That Manu, who is to come in the future Sāvarṇi Manvantara, even now wanders on the beautiful summit of Meru.

भ्राता शनैश्चरस्तत्र ग्रहत्वं स तु लब्धवान्। त्वष्टाऽनु तेन रूपेण विष्णोश्चक्रमकल्पयत्। महाऽप्रतिहतं युद्धे दानव प्रतिवारणे ।। २२.

There, his brother Śanaiścara attained the status of a planet; Tvaṣṭṛ, by that form, fashioned Viṣṇu’s discus—great, irresistible in battle, a barrier against the Dānavas.

यवीयसी तयोर्या तु यमुना च यशस्विनी। अभवत् सा सरिच्छ्रेष्ठा यमुना लोकभाविनी ।। २२.

The younger of the two, renowned Yamunā, became the foremost of rivers, Yamunā, the sustainer of worlds.

यस्तु ज्येष्ठो महातेजाः सर्गो यस्य तु साम्प्रतम्। विस्तरं तस्य वक्ष्यामि मनोर्वैवस्वतस्य ह ।। २२.

Now I will tell in detail of the eldest, the mighty one, whose creation is current—the progeny of Manu Vaivasvata.

इदं तु जन्म देवानां श्रृणुयाद्वा पठेत वा। वैवस्वतस्य पुत्राणां सप्तानान्तु महौजसाम्। आपदं प्राप्य मुच्येत प्राप्नुयाच्च महद्यशः ।। २२.

Whoever hears or recites this birth of the gods—the seven mighty sons of Vaivasvata—will be freed from calamity and attain great fame.

सूत उवाच।। ततो मन्वन्तरेऽतीते चाक्षुषे दैवतैः सह। वैवस्वताय महते पृथिवीराज्यमादिशत् ।। २३.

Sūta said: Then, when the Cākṣuṣa Manvantara had passed, along with the gods, the great sovereignty of the earth was entrusted to Vaivasvata.

तस्य वैवस्वतो वक्ष्ये साम्प्रतस्य महात्मनः। आनुपूर्व्येण वै विप्राः कीर्त्त्यमानं निबोधत ।। २३.

I will now recount, in order, the lineage of the great-souled Vaivasvata; listen, O sages, as it is proclaimed.

मनोर्वैवस्वतस्येह सर्गमादाय साम्प्रतम् । मनोः प्रथमजस्यासन् नवपुत्रास्तु तत्समाः ।। २३.

Taking up the present creation of Manu Vaivasvata, there were nine sons born to that first Manu.
