व्रजं कृणुध्वं स हि वो नृपाणो वर्म सीव्यध्वं बहुला पृथूनि । पुरः कृणुध्वमायसीरधृष्टा मा वः सुस्रोच्चमसो दृंहता तम्
Make the enclosure, for it is for your leaders; sew the armor, broad and thick. Make the fort of iron, unassailable; let not your well-formed vessel be broken by the enemy.
आ वो धियं यज्ञियां वर्त ऊतये देवा देवीं यजतां यज्ञियामिह । सा नो दुहीयद्यवसेव गत्वी सहस्रधारा पयसा मही गौः
To you, O gods, we turn our sacred thought for help; may the divine, worshipful goddess be worshipped here. May she, like a cow with a thousand streams of milk, yield us abundance for our sustenance.
आ तू षिञ्च हरिमीं द्रोरुपस्थे वाशीभिस्तक्षताश्मन्मयीभिः । परि ष्वजध्वं दश कक्ष्याभिरुभे धुरौ प्रति वह्निं युनक्त
Pour the golden-hued offering into the vessel; shape it with axes, with tools of stone. Embrace it with ten bands; yoke both yokes, and set the fire in its place.
उभे धुरौ वह्निरापिब्दमानोऽन्तर्योनेव चरति द्विजानिः । वनस्पतिं वन आस्थापयध्वं नि षू दधिध्वमखनन्त उत्सम्
The fire, drinking from both yokes, moves within as a double-born being, as if in the womb. Set the wooden post in the wood; place it down, and let them hollow out the well.
कपृन्नरः कपृथमुद्दधातन चोदयत खुदत वाजसातये । निष्टिग्र्यः पुत्रमा च्यावयोतय इन्द्रं सबाध इह सोमपीतये
O men, raise the well-known, the renowned one; urge on, dig for the prize of strength. Let the one with the staff set the child in motion; call Indra here to drink Soma with the assembly.
प्र ते रथं मिथूकृतमिन्द्रोऽवतु धृष्णुया । अस्मिन्नाजौ पुरुहूत श्रवाय्ये धनभक्षेषु नोऽव
May Indra guard your well-matched chariot with his might. In this battle, O much-invoked one, for fame and for the winning of wealth, protect us.
उत्स्म वातो वहति वासोऽस्या अधिरथं यदजयत्सहस्रम् । रथीरभून्मुद्गलानी गविष्टौ भरे कृतं व्यचेदिन्द्रसेना
The wind blows forth, his garment is upon the chariot, when he won a thousand. Mudgalānī became a charioteer in the contest for cattle; Indra's host scattered the enemy in battle.
अन्तर्यच्छ जिघांसतो वज्रमिन्द्राभिदासतः । दासस्य वा मघवन्नार्यस्य वा सनुतर्यवया वधम्
Hold back the weapon of the one who seeks to harm, O Indra, against the assailant. Whether of the Dāsa or the Arya, O bountiful one, let the weapon of the enemy be destroyed.
उद्नो ह्रदमपिबज्जर्हृषाणः कूटं स्म तृंहदभिमातिमेति । प्र मुष्कभारः श्रव इच्छमानोऽजिरं बाहू अभरत्सिषासन्
He drank the water of the deep pool, roaring; he broke the stronghold, overcoming the foe. Desiring fame, he bore the heavy load with his swift arms, striving for victory.
न्यक्रन्दयन्नुपयन्त एनममेहयन्वृषभं मध्य आजेः । तेन सूभर्वं शतवत्सहस्रं गवां मुद्गलः प्रधने जिगाय
They came, bellowing, surrounding him, urinating like a bull in the midst of the herd. With that strength, Mudgala won in battle a hundred, a thousand cattle in the contest.
ककर्दवे वृषभो युक्त आसीदवावचीत्सारथिरस्य केशी । दुधेर्युक्तस्य द्रवतः सहानस ऋच्छन्ति ष्मा निष्पदो मुद्गलानीम्
The bull was yoked in the mire, his charioteer with flowing hair stood below. The runners of the yoked cow, swift as they ran, reached the goal for Mudgalānī.
उत प्रधिमुदहन्नस्य विद्वानुपायुनग्वंसगमत्र शिक्षन् । इन्द्र उदावत्पतिमघ्न्यानामरंहत पद्याभिः ककुद्मान्
The wise one, knowing the contest, struck the rival and approached the path, learning here. Indra, the lord of the unyoked, urged on the herds with his steps, the high-crested one.
शुनमष्ट्राव्यचरत्कपर्दी वरत्रायां दार्वानह्यमानः । नृम्णानि कृण्वन्बहवे जनाय गाः पस्पशानस्तविषीरधत्त
The braided one moved like a goad, in the contest for the prize, driven with a wooden stick. Performing heroic deeds for many people, touching the cows, he gained strength.
इमं तं पश्य वृषभस्य युञ्जं काष्ठाया मध्ये द्रुघणं शयानम् । येन जिगाय शतवत्सहस्रं गवां मुद्गलः पृतनाज्येषु
See this one, yoked to the bull, lying in the midst of the wood, the driver at rest. By him, Mudgala won a hundred, a thousand cattle in the contests of battle.
आरे अघा को न्वित्था ददर्श यं युञ्जन्ति तम्वा स्थापयन्ति । नास्मै तृणं नोदकमा भरन्त्युत्तरो धुरो वहति प्रदेदिशत्
Far away, who indeed has seen him? Whom they yoke, or whom they set in place? For him, they bring neither grass nor water; the upper yoke bears the load, directed forward.
परिवृक्तेव पतिविद्यमानट् पीप्याना कूचक्रेणेव सिञ्चन् । एषैष्या चिद्रथ्या जयेम सुमङ्गलं सिनवदस्तु सातम्
Like a wife seeking her husband in a deserted place, swelling like a water channel, pouring forth; with this chariot, even if it is old, may we win, may good fortune and victory be ours.
त्वं विश्वस्य जगतश्चक्षुरिन्द्रासि चक्षुषः । वृषा यदाजिं वृषणा सिषाससि चोदयन्वध्रिणा युजा
You, Indra, are the eye of all that moves; the eye of vision. As a bull, you lead the contest of the strong, urging on the unyoked with your companion.
आशुः शिशानो वृषभो न भीमो घनाघनः क्षोभणश्चर्षणीनाम् । संक्रन्दनोऽनिमिष एकवीरः शतं सेना अजयत्साकमिन्द्रः
Swift, fierce, like a mighty bull, terrifying, a smasher of hosts, a stirrer of men; the shouter, unblinking, the sole hero—Indra, with a hundred hosts, conquered together.
संक्रन्दनेनानिमिषेण जिष्णुना युत्कारेण दुश्च्यवनेन धृष्णुना । तदिन्द्रेण जयत तत्सहध्वं युधो नर इषुहस्तेन वृष्णा
With the shouter, the unblinking, the victorious, with the war-cry, the impetuous, the bold—by that Indra, win; stand firm together in battle, O men, with the mighty one who holds the arrow.
स इषुहस्तैः स निषङ्गिभिर्वशी संस्रष्टा स युध इन्द्रो गणेन । संसृष्टजित्सोमपा बाहुशर्ध्युग्रधन्वा प्रतिहिताभिरस्ता
That Indra, with warriors bearing arrows and quivers, the mighty one, the leader in battle, conquers with his troop; victorious in assembled combat, Soma-drinker, strong-armed, fierce-bowed, he stands firm with weapons drawn.
बृहस्पते परि दीया रथेन रक्षोहामित्राँ अपबाधमानः । प्रभञ्जन्त्सेनाः प्रमृणो युधा जयन्नस्माकमेध्यविता रथानाम्
O Bṛhaspati, circle around with your chariot, destroyer of demons and foes, driving them away; breaking enemy hosts, crushing in battle, victorious, be our guide and protector of chariots.
बलविज्ञाय स्थविरः प्रवीरः सहस्वान्वाजी सहमान उग्रः । अभिवीरो अभिसत्वा सहोजा जैत्रमिन्द्र रथमा तिष्ठ गोवित्
Knowing strength, steadfast, supremely heroic, powerful, victorious, enduring, and fierce, O Indra, full of might, stand upon the conquering chariot, bestower of cattle.
गोत्रभिदं गोविदं वज्रबाहुं जयन्तमज्म प्रमृणन्तमोजसा । इमं सजाता अनु वीरयध्वमिन्द्रं सखायो अनु सं रभध्वम्
Breaker of enclosures, knower of cattle, with arms like thunderbolts, triumphant, shattering with power—O companions, emulate this Indra, your kinsman; unite together in strength.
अभि गोत्राणि सहसा गाहमानोऽदयो वीरः शतमन्युरिन्द्रः । दुश्च्यवनः पृतनाषाळयुध्योऽस्माकं सेना अवतु प्र युत्सु
Indra, the hero, hundred-powered, with force plunging against the barriers, irresistible in battle, destroyer of the wicked, let our army prevail in the fight.
इन्द्र आसां नेता बृहस्पतिर्दक्षिणा यज्ञः पुर एतु सोमः । देवसेनानामभिभञ्जतीनां जयन्तीनां मरुतो यन्त्वग्रम्
Let Indra lead these, Bṛhaspati and Right, let the sacrifice and Soma go before; among the divine hosts that break through and conquer, let the Maruts advance at the front.
इन्द्रस्य वृष्णो वरुणस्य राज्ञ आदित्यानां मरुतां शर्ध उग्रम् । महामनसां भुवनच्यवानां घोषो देवानां जयतामुदस्थात्
The mighty voice of Indra the bull, of King Varuṇa, of the Ādityas, of the fierce troop of Maruts, of the great-minded, world-moving gods, has arisen in victory.
उद्धर्षय मघवन्नायुधान्युत्सत्वनां मामकानां मनांसि । उद्वृत्रहन्वाजिनां वाजिनान्युद्रथानां जयतां यन्तु घोषाः
O bountiful one, rouse the weapons, stir the minds of my eager warriors; let the victorious cries of the chariot-fighters, the horsemen, and the slayers of Vṛtra rise up.
अस्माकमिन्द्रः समृतेषु ध्वजेष्वस्माकं या इषवस्ता जयन्तु । अस्माकं वीरा उत्तरे भवन्त्वस्माँ उ देवा अवता हवेषु
May Indra be with us among the assembled banners; may our arrows be victorious; may our heroes be supreme; O gods, protect us in our calls for aid.
अमीषां चित्तं प्रतिलोभयन्ती गृहाणाङ्गान्यप्वे परेहि । अभि प्रेहि निर्दह हृत्सु शोकैरन्धेनामित्रास्तमसा सचन्ताम्
Confound their minds, seize their limbs, drive them away; advance, burn them in their hearts with flames, let our enemies be joined with blinding darkness.
प्रेता जयता नर इन्द्रो वः शर्म यच्छतु । उग्रा वः सन्तु बाहवोऽनाधृष्या यथासथ
Go forth and conquer, O men; may Indra grant you protection; let your arms be strong, invincible, as you desire.
