O Indu, mighty and pure, you drive away all who are hostile or godless, dispelling those whose minds waver. In the sacred rites, the priests anoint, adorn, and unite the offerings; they stir the divine power, anointing with honey. The golden-hooved ones seize the sacrificial animal in the flowing waters, catching it as it breathes and leaps from the river. We sing to the wise and purifying one—the great stream flows forth, and darkness rushes away. Just as a snake sheds its skin, the radiant one glides onward; like a playful youth, the tawny-hued moves forth with vigor. The foremost king, exalted and shining, is established in the world by day; bathed in clarified butter, he is beautiful, oceanic, radiant-charioted, purified for wealth and home. In the sacred fire, the eighth and first half, with all the fires, O Agni, may this sacrifice and our words be accomplished with strength and glory. We worship each god who is eternal, and for you, O Agni, we kindle the offering. May the lord of the people, the delightful and worthy Hotar, be dear to us, and may we be dear to our own fires. We call upon Indra, surpassing all, for the good of the people—may he be ours alone. Mighty one, may you accept this offering at the sacrificial feast; increase our nourishment, unconquered lord. Like a bull among the herd, born of noble lineage, you stir the peoples with your strength; you are the unconquered lord. O gracious one, by your wondrous aid, inspire us to generous gifts; Agni, you are the charioteer of this wealth—lead us to a secure refuge. Guard our offspring and descendants, O Agni, with your faithful companions; drive away divine hostilities and the harms of the ungodly. O Viṣṇu, what is your renowned name, you who encircle all? For I have declared, “I am Śipiviṣṭa.” Do not hide your form from us, as you appeared in another shape at the assembly. Now, O Śipiviṣṭa, I declare your offering, knowing your works; I praise you, mighty in the wilds, abiding at the farthest end of this expanse. For you, O Viṣṇu, I utter “vaṣaṭ”; may you accept this offering, O Śipiviṣṭa. May my praises reach you; may you all protect us always with well-being. O Vāyu, radiant one, I have come to you with the foremost portion of the sweet drink; come to drink Soma, O god, worthy of praise, together with your retinue. Indra and Vāyu, you are worthy of these Somas, for the streams flow toward you both as waters descend together. O Vāyu and Indra, mighty together, lords of strength, come together on the same chariot with your companions to drink Soma. Then, adorned through the night, you approach the prize, when the thoughts urge the tawny one of Vivasvat to set forth. We prepare that exhilarating drink, pleasing to Indra, which the cows, in their strength, have bestowed, both in ancient times and now, O wise ones. That purifying one is praised by the ancient song, and inspired thoughts, bearing the names of the gods, have adorned it. Like a horse with strong reins, we honor you, Agni, with reverence, sovereign of the rituals. May that son, mighty, far-reaching, gracious, and generous, become ours. May he always protect us from harm, from near and far, from mortal and evil, for the sake of all our lives. Indra, in battles you surpass all opponents; you destroy curses, create anew, and as the slayer of Vṛtra, you conquer the assailant. The earths themselves followed your overwhelming might, as mothers follow their child; you shatter all your foes, O Indra, when in your wrath you conquer Vṛtra. The sacrifice turned back the hostile ones, making a covering in the sky. In the intoxication of Soma, Indra split the midspace, the expanse of heaven, striking the enclosure. Then she rose up from the Angirases, revealing herself from hidden places; once concealed, she has now driven the covering away. That mighty one, victorious in the assembly, may you all invoke in every song, to stir him for help—the fighter, ever unconquered, drinker of Soma, unshaken, a man of unfailing resolve. Grant us, Indra, wealth and abundance; protect us in the contest for riches. That great power of yours, Indra—your skill and wisdom—the mind sharpens the desirable thunderbolt. For you, Indra, the sky proclaims your manliness, the earth your fame; the waters and mountains urge you on. You are praised by Viṣṇu of vast abode, by Mitra, by Varuṇa; the host exults in you, as do the Maruts. To you, Agni, for strength, the peoples sing praise—be unconquered and destroy the foe. Will you, Agni, for our desire of cattle, seek out wealth for us and make it wide and abundant? Do not, Agni, in great wealth, carry us away to another’s share; as you win together, so win wealth for us. To the wrath of the one, all peoples bow, as rivers to the ocean. He split the head of Vṛtra, the one who resisted, with his hundred-jointed, powerful thunderbolt.
