Overview
Ayodhya is an ancient city on the Sarayu River, once capital of the Kosala kingdom, which the Ramayana identifies as the birthplace of Rama. It is counted first among the Sapta Puri, the seven most important Hindu pilgrimage cities. Its principal shrines include the Ram Mandir, inaugurated in January 2024 at the site believed to be Rama's birthplace, and the hilltop Hanuman Garhi.
