Overview
Janakpur, or Janakpurdham, is the capital of Madhesh Province in Nepal, about 225 km southeast of Kathmandu, and a centre of Maithili language and culture. Named after King Janaka of the Videha kingdom in the Mithila region, it is revered as the birthplace of Sita; the modern city dates from the early 18th century and was retrospectively designated as the site of the Videha capital. Its Janaki Mandir, dedicated to Sita, is on Nepal's UNESCO tentative list, and the Sita Svayamvara and wedding of Rama and Sita described in the Ramayana are believed to have taken place here. The wedding is celebrated each year at Vivaha Panchami, which draws large numbers of pilgrims.
