Overview
Verul, beside the Ellora Caves in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad) district of Maharashtra, is home to the Grishneshwar Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, about 30 km north-west of Aurangabad. The temple is mentioned in the Shiva Purana and Skanda Purana, was restored by Maloji Bhosale in the 16th century and rebuilt in its present form in the 18th century under Holkar patronage. About one and a half kilometres away lies the Kailasa temple (Cave 16), the largest rock-cut Hindu temple at Ellora.
