Overview
The Kamakhya Temple stands on Nilachal Hill in western Guwahati, about 8 km from the city centre, and is dedicated to the mother goddess Kamakhya. It is counted among the oldest of the 51 Shakti Peethas and is a principal centre of Tantric Shakta worship; tradition holds that it marks the place where the yoni of Sati fell. Its best-known observance is the annual Ambubachi Mela.
