Overview
Kolhapur is a city on the banks of the Panchganga river in southern Maharashtra, referred to in Hindu tradition as Karvir and often called 'Dakshin Kashi' for its spiritual history and the antiquity of its Mahalakshmi (Ambabai) shrine. Legend holds that the city is named after the demon Kolhasur, slain by the goddess Mahalakshmi. Her temple, dated to the 7th century, is counted among the three and a half Shakti Peethas, and the hilltop Jyotiba Temple lies nearby.
